Is That A Poem In Your Pocket? (or, e.e.)

Today is Poem In Your Pocket DayI've mentioned this day before, so here goes my selection for my virtual pocket this year: e.e. cummings' "somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond".  Yes, it is used to great effect in Hannah and Her Sisters...and yes, it's so high school it hurts.  However, the last stanza of this poem is just...undeniable.

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

But You Did, Rose (Or, The Talk-Back Artist)

The Oscars are this evening. This little ditty has been sitting in my head for weeks, and it's fitting to drop it tonight.

In keeping up with the onslaught of end-of-the-year-so-called-prestige films, I end up seeing the same previews over and over again for movies I supposedly want (or should want) to see. Normally this is irritating enough...but this year, there was an added annoyance:

The trailer for the 3-D re-release of Titanic.

I know the world just loved to shit itself over this particular movie. For me, the damn ship couldn't sink fast enough.

Anyway, in one screening of said Titty-tanic trailer, I was not alone in the misery brought on by revisiting Leo DiCaprio's acting pre-Scorsese, Kate Winslet's easily flopped out flapjacks, and Billy Zane's glowering hairpiece. Just as the ship was going down and Kate/Rose whelps: "OH JACK! I'LL NEVER LET GO!", someone in the audience wailed back defiantly:

"But you did. YOU DID LET GO."

Thank you, whoever you are.
